KlaipėdaTraffic: Streaming Real-Time AIS Data Directly to Navigation Apps

Published: 2026-03-10 · Technology

KlaipėdaTraffic.lt was originally created as a real-time AIS monitoring platform for Klaipėda port. Over time, the system evolved into a full AIS infrastructure capable of delivering live AIS streams directly to professional navigation applications.

This allows pilots, mariners and maritime enthusiasts to connect their navigation software directly to the KlaipėdaTraffic AIS feed and view vessel targets in real time.

The system uses secure relay technology and can be accessed from supported navigation applications that accept standard NMEA AIS streams over TCP/IP.

AIS messages such as !AIVDM and !AIVDO are forwarded in real time and can be used exactly like a local AIS receiver connected directly to the application.

For the navigation software, the stream behaves like a standard network AIS source.

Navigation apps that support AIS network streams

Many modern navigation apps allow AIS input via TCP or UDP network streams.

Professional / Pilot software

  • Wärtsilä Pilot PRO
  • SeaPilot
  • SafePilot
  • Qastor
  • Transas / Navi-Sailor
  • TimeZero Professional
  • OpenCPN (pilot and enthusiast use)

Commercial navigation software

  • TimeZero Navigator
  • Expedition Marine Navigation
  • Adrena Navigation Software

Mobile navigation apps

  • iNavX
  • TZ iBoat
  • Aqua Map
  • iSailor
  • Navionics Boating (limited AIS support depending on configuration)

Not every app supports external AIS feeds, but many professional systems do.

How to connect

Most applications allow adding a network AIS source.

Typical configuration:

Protocol: TCP, Data: NMEA AIS

Once connected, the app will display:

  • vessel positions
  • vessel names
  • MMSI
  • course and speed
  • heading
  • vessel dimensions (when available)

The result is very similar to being connected to a physical AIS receiver.

Why this is useful

For pilots and maritime professionals this means:

  • access to AIS targets when local reception is limited
  • ability to test navigation setups
  • redundancy AIS source
  • remote monitoring of port traffic

For developers and enthusiasts, it allows experimentation with AIS data inside real navigation software.

Security

The KlaipėdaTraffic AIS relay is not an open public stream.

Access is restricted using secure network access in order to prevent abuse and maintain system stability.

Closing

KlaipėdaTraffic continues to evolve from a port monitoring tool into a broader maritime data platform.

Real-time AIS streaming to navigation applications is one step toward a more connected maritime ecosystem around the Baltic Sea.
